Manny’s birthday book 2 January
My grandmother, who I called Manny, had a birthday book. I’m posting the entries throughout the year, as they appear.
From Manny’s Birthday Book: January 2nd – Brian Ronald J– 1968
A large brown muff for cold, cold hands
So dainty, too, trimmed with bows;
Of all comforts the best, when you have to go out,
On a day when it freezes or blows.
Brian is my cousin – Manny’s fifth grandchild if my calculations are correct.
The birthday book was published in London. Obviously Kate Greenaway was oblivious to the seasons in the southern hemisphere. Manny grew up in Kalgoorlie. I wonder what she thought when she was a child, reading that verse on a hot, goldfields January day!
