Manny’s birthday book – February 24

February 24, 2011

Kate Greenaway's Birthday Book for ChildrenMy grandmother, who I called Manny, had a birthday book.  I’m posting the entries throughout the year, as they appear.

Justin Nowland born February 24

From Manny’s Birthday Book:  February 10th – Justin Nowland

A Japanese tea-pot! let’s have some tea,

A cup of the most delicious bohea!;

Then plenty of sugar, and plenty of cream,

And with smiles of contentment our faces will beam.

Justin writes a very nice N.

Justin Nowland does not appear on the Western Australian BDM indexes.  So either he was never here, was here for a short time, or his name was entered by him or by someone else, after the dates for the historical index.  There is no birth year entered.

Manny had family including cousins in New South Wales and Victoria.  It’s possible Justin is one of those.  Nowland is not a name I recognise, but I have not yet traced all the more recent family connections in those families.

I wouldn’t have thought Justin was a common name at the turn of the 20th Century.  Perhaps it was a nickname?

If you think you know who Justin Nowland is, please comment and let me know.

    no, i don’t really think so either. I think he might be from new south wales. I am getting a sneaking suspicion the book belonged to my grandmothers mother or grandmother before her.
