Manny’s birthday book – March 10

March 10, 2011

Kate Greenaway's Birthday Book for ChildrenMy grandmother, who I called Manny, had a birthday book.  I’m posting the entries throughout the year, as they appear.

Mrs Bird born 10 March

From Manny’s Birthday Book:  March 1o – Mrs Bird

Alack! alas! and well-a-day,

Here’s never a child come out to play;

I’ll tell Belinda, Clarissa and Jane,

I never will promise to meet them again.

So there, Belinda, Clarissa and Jane.  That’ll teach you.

So who is Mrs Bird?  A favourite teacher, perhaps? Or a mother of one of Manny’s friends?  There were alot of Mrs Bird’s around according to the BDM indexes.

And it just occurred to me it could be an actual bird.  Manny’s grandmother had a parrot.  The parrot used to call out to her ‘are you there, Mrs Jones?’.  It lived by the door that visitors would come to, and that’s what they would call out, so the bird learned to say that.  One day the bird was stolen.  But not for long.  Granny was walking down the street and she heard ‘are you there, Mrs Jones?’.

I just got a mental image  of the bird calling out ‘are you there Mrs Jones’ and Granny calling back ‘are you there Mrs Bird’.

Later in the year there is an entry for a Sheilah Bird – so this is probably her mother.

I ran a marriages search and it turns out there were a lot of Mrs Birds.

If you think you know who Mrs Bird is, please comment and let me know.

    Oh what a nice story about the bird. It would be quite touching if the name did refer to the bird as opposed to a person. But it sounds like it’s not the case.

    Yes, I thought so too 🙂 but there are more ‘Birds’ further on in the birthday book, so its almost certainly a person. But it was a good opportunity to share the bird story. I’m glad you liked it 🙂
