Manny’s birthday book – May 14

May 14, 2011

Kate Greenaway's Birthday Book for ChildrenMy grandmother, who I called Manny, had a birthday book.  I’m posting the entries throughout the year, as they appear.

From Manny’s Birthday Book:  May 14 – Angus McLeod Jr

Up, up flies the shuttlecock, up with a jump,

Down on the battledore now, with a thump.

Fly away, shuttlecock, higher yet fly,

Up to the clouds that pass over the sky.

Angus Mcleod Jr was Manny’s younger brother, who she always referred to as ‘Mac’.  Although, as is noted in my Aunty’s handwriting, he died in 1983, I don’t recall ever meeting him.

This is a photo of Mac with his (and Manny’s) grandfather, George Jones and one of his nieces.  The original of this photo is tiny.  Now that I’ve scanned it and enlarged it, it looks like Mac is wearing a uniform.  A search of the War Memorial website turned up nothing, but it directed me to the National Archives site, where I have ordered Mac’s RAAF Personnel File. Angus ‘Mac’ McLeod was cremated at Karrakatta in Perth, Western Australia.

gosh, it’s amazing how enlarging the photo set you on that trail. God knows what other secrets lie in photographs, if only we look hard enough.

Yes – I’m glad to have the photos to reveal the secrets/clues. I’ve had this (tiny) photo for years. The availability of the technology to enlarge it easily and cheaply at home also helps 🙂

also, really glad to see you’re still reading. You might have noticed I’ve stopped writing every day – I’ve been really busy with other things, but intend to get back to it soon. Thanks for commenting x
