Manny’s birthday book – June 18

June 18, 2011

Kate Greenaway's Birthday Book for ChildrenMy grandmother, who I called Manny, had a birthday book.  I’m posting the entries throughout the year, as they appear.

From Manny’s Birthday Book:  June 18– Granny

Tiger-lilly, tall and straight,

How handsomely you grow.

Your spotted leaves and yellow tongues —

But stop! – you’re vain, I know.

‘Granny’ is Emily Bertha Eliza Peck, who married George Jones.  She was Manny’s grandmother, and is my great-great grandmother.  The entry is written in Granny’s own handwriting.  The blue biro entries noting her year of birth and date of death are in Manny’s handwriting.

I love that she made those notes in her book.

Granny is one of the authors of the ‘Letters to Frank’, that you can access from the links on the right.
