Manny’s birthday book – October 28

October 28, 2011

Kate Greenaway's Birthday Book for ChildrenMy grandmother, who I called Manny, had a birthday book.  I’m posting the entries throughout the year, as they appear.

From Manny’s Birthday Book:  October 28th – Chrissie Urquhart

Now listen, while I tell you,

About this little maid,

Who went out with her Mamma –

But now it all is said.

There were no Chrissie Urquharts (or Christine/Christina) of Manny’s age born or married in Western Australia.

There was an Isabel Christina Urquhart born in 1897 (nine years after my great grandmother, Manny’s mother).  Her parent’s names were Elizabeth McKenzie and William Urquhart (1897/3033) and she was born in Perth, Western Australia.  She does not appear in the marriage index.  An Isabel Urquhart died in East Coolgardie Registration District in 1908 (1908/189WA)

A Christina Urquhart married a man whose first name was Sarkies.  The marriage is registered twice – the first registration, the husband’s name is Sarkies Martin (1913/575WA) and the second, the husband’s name is Sarkies Naphapiet (1913/575WA) – both registered in Perth, Western Australia.

This is another entry that leads me to the conclusion that the birthday book belonged to Manny’s mother before it belonged to her.

Sarkies Martin (father Martin, mother Mary) died in Perth on 13 May 1963 (1963/1252WA) aged 75.  Christina Martin died 30 January 1974 in Perth, aged 81 years.  Barbara Martin is Grantee on their grave.

Another Sarkies Martin died 1 July 1988 aged 92 years.  Adam Maurice Mishkin is Grantee of his grave.

If you think you know who the Chrissie Urquhart in Manny’s birthday book is, or indeed if you know anything about Sarkies Martin, please comment and let me know.

Hi I think Christina Urquhart is the mother of my wife’s 87 yr old uncle Don Martin.

His father was Sarkies Martin and his wife was Urquhart. Don was born in Perth had five sisters one called Barbara And three brothers.

Apparently Dons Father was related to the Sarkies Martins who owned the Raffles in Singapore.

      Hi Shane
What an interesting story! Thank you for sharing it. I wonder what my great-grandmother’s connection to Don’s mother was? Perhaps they were school friends. I wonder if Christina grew up in Sydney like my great grandmother. Perhaps they were related… I’ll have to do more research 🙂 Thanks again. Michelle
